Cake Club #7

It's that time again, time to make you all drool over your screens as I bring you the latest from cake club. Hopefully by now you all know about cake club but if not then catch up on all my other cake club posts here: Cake Club #1Cake Club #2Cake Club #3Cake Club #4Cake Club #5 & Cake Club #6

The theme this month was a cake within a cake. This seemed like an exciting yet challenging theme to start with but it soon became tiresome after trawling the internet to find something interesting to make! In the end I decided what I was going to make on the morning of cake club! Talk about leaving it last minute! I decided to make a cupcake with in a cupcake…

I have a giant cupcake silicone mould so decided to use this to make the main cake and then made a cupcake to go inside. The giant cupcake is flavoured chocolate orange and the smaller one is plain vanilla sponge. Last minute I decided to take the centre of the vanilla cupcake out and fill it with a small amount of the chocolate orange cake so when it was cut into it looked like a cake in a cake in a cake.

I then decorated my giant cupcake with orange buttercream icing and bronze crunch. You can see from the picture on the right what my cake looked like inside. I think I went a tad overboard with the icing as by the time I had transported the cake to cake club, a lot of it had slid off and collected around the bottom.

My mum decided to make a chocolate loaf cake with red hearts running through. She baked a red loaf, sliced it and then used a heart cookie cutter to cut the sponge. She filled the loaf tin with some of the chocolate mix before positioning the hearts and then filling with the rest of the mixture. I told her she had put the hearts in the wrong way but she was adamant they were right. But guess what? They ended up upside down! Anyway the end result looked amazing and it was so yummy. She decorated it with dried strawberry pieces.

And here are some of the other cakes and what they looked like inside…

This is such an amazing idea having a chocolate cake with a carrot shape in to represent a carrot growing in the ground.

This was an amazing cake and the heart in the middle is so perfectly formed. The centre was a chocolate and amaretto sponge surrounded by strawberry sponge and covered with a salted caramel icing.

This was a lemon and lime drizzle cake with a heart in a heart inside. The green heart was an amazing colour and it was very yummy!

This cake was meant to be in 3 distinct layers with apple and cinnamon cake at the top and bottom and a lemon sponge in-between. However because the lemon cake was so light, it rose to the top so the cake ended up with wobbly stripes throughout!

Finally, this cake was a cheesecake within a swiss roll. It was amazing and I don't think I would ever be able to make something as tricky as this sounded! I think mine would end up splitting and I can tell I would get so frustrated with it!

Once again, all of our cakes were so different and the only vague similarity was that 3 people used hearts within their cakes. As much as this theme turned out ok, I don't think I'll be making another cake within a cake for a very long time! The next theme is Autumn which I think is a fairly easy theme as it's very broad. I've got a few ideas, but if you have any ideas please leave me a comment!

What do you think of my cake within a cake? What about the other cakes?
