Review: Maybelline Lasting Drama Black Shock Gel Liner

Happy Easter! I hope you're all having a lovely Easter weekend and pigging out on far too much chocolate!
I came across these photos that I had taken a good 2-3 months ago when I first bought this product and thought it was about time I reviewed it!

I've always been a liquid eyeliner girl but when gel eyeliner became the thing to use a couple of years ago, I jumped on the bandwagon and bought the Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Eye Liner - you know the one that comes in the little round pot with a brush that was THE gel liner to have! I didn't get on with it to start with but once I was used to it, I loved it! So when I saw this gel pen I thought this would be ideal for creating a quick line/flick with the high impact of a gel liner. As you can see from the photo below, the nib is also slanted, perfect for creating a quick even line and flick and comes with a little red stopper.

In order to get the gel out, you twist the bottom of the pen. This is where I think the design is disappointing as its very hard to get the right amount of gel out! If you twist it too much then you don't get an even line as there is far too much product and it squeezes out the edge. However if you don't twist it enough, you have to keep stopping to twist it more and the line ends up looking messy and not very smooth.

I love the look this gel liner creates and the concept is great but in reality, it doesn't really work for me. I'm going to keep practicing with it and see if I can perfect the technique and for those of you who are already masters of eyeliner, this is definitely worth a try! My only work of warning is that this gel is quite hard to get off so if you make a mistake you're probably going to have to take it off and start again rather than just adjusting it slightly.

Personally I'm going to stick with my pot of gel or a liquid liner on a daily basis and practice a bit more with this one.

Have you tried this gel liner? What do you think of it?

  1. The twisty bit reminds of concealer pens which work quite well, but I've only ever used pot gel liners too so I don't know how well I'll get on with that!

    1. Yeah it's a very similar concept but I guess with concealer pens it doesn't matter if you twist a bit too much out! I would personally stick with your pot of gel liner! X

  2. I just bought this last weekend because it seemed like such a good idea, but I agree with you, it just doesn't work! I found it hard to apply evenly and could only get a thick line when I prefer a thinner line usually. Some things are great in theory but not so great in reality! xx

    1. Ah that's really interesting to find that you think the same! Definitely a product that's great in theory but not in reality! X

  3. This looks interesting but I would find it hard moving away from my pot of gel eye liner and brush! xo

    1. Mmm interesting is a very good word! If a pot of gel liner and a brush works for you then definitely stick with it! X
